Mac OS 7.6.1 is a maintenance release for Mac OS 7.6 users. This release corrects a variety of problems that have emerged since the initial release of Mac OS 7.6 in January. Included in this update is the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler for 68030- and 68040-based Macintosh computers. Type 11 errors have also been eliminated on PowerPC machines, as they now report the proper error message instead of the generic Type 11 error. Finally, PowerBook users will benefit from a wide variety of bug fixes and compatibility updates for PC cards and serial port use. This update delivers similar fixes and enhancements found in the client version of the Mac OS X 10.2.6 Update. The issues described below are relevant in a server setting, but you must also update the client computers.

Software installation is now more reliable for client computers that are installing from a file located on a remote Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) server volume. AFP client copy reliability has been improved, resolving an issue in which a file could have become unusable after copying via AFP in certain circumstances. A rare condition in which users cannot complete the login process has been addressed. CUPS printing for Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8150 DN laser printer has also been improved, allowing full text and image print by default.

This small extension corrects a problem with the Apple Basic Color Monitor. In some cases, the display appears to be overly green in color in some Quadra, Centris, and other machines. This extension corrects the problem and may also correct the problem on non-Apple VGA monitors.

This update file provides modem compatibility for using System 7.5 with the PowerBook 150, and also addresses a potential problem with third-party internal modems not powering off correctly after use.

These scripts overcome problems with 3Com-based ISPs to permit V.90 (over 33.6k) connections, and allow you to limit the connect speed to any V.90 rate from 34.6k to 50k for added reliability. These will work with the PowerBook G3 Series, the B&W G3s, G4s, iMacs and any later Mac with an Apple V.90 modem - except late 2001 and onwards, which have a USB internal modem (I'm working on that). Dramatic speed improvements are unlikely with any recent Mac modems, or any which have been upgraded with Apple Modem Upgrader 2, since the latest firmware (V2.300 - check with Apple System Profiler) is better than the original versions.
