This update includes improvements to starting up Mac OS X from the local hard disk, Firewire target disk mode, starting up from the local hard disk, network start-up, and system stability. This update also adds support for additional security options which allow the Open Firmware to be password protected.
The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with slot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD or network disk) prior to following the update instructions.

The EMI 2|6 Firmware Loader, as the name indicates, automatically loads the EMI 2|6 Firmware into the EMI 2|6 during startup of your computer. The firmware will be kept in the EMI 2|6 as long as it is connected and powered.
Once the firmware is loaded, the EMI 2|6 is available under Mac OS X using Mac OS X's built-in USB Audio Driver. Open the control panel "System Preferences > Sound" to choose the EMI 2|6 as the main system output. All signals, e.g. from iTunes, will then be played back via Channel 1 and 2 of the EMI 2|6.

It appears most RAM vendors will replace RAM if you find yours has been disabled by this firmware.

The iMac Update 1.1 includes these improvements, which enhance the experience with many USB peripherals, as well as enhancements previously released in iMac Update 1.0. While Apple suggests that every iMac user install this update, it notes that only those using additional USB devices other than the Apple USB keyboard and Apple USB mouse included with the iMac are likely to notice the improvements after installation. This version improves the identification of USB devices during start-up and more.
Note: You must install the iMac Firmware Update before installing the iMac Update 1.1.
